High-Visibility Safety Apparel Classes & CSA Standards
High-visibility safety apparel (HVSA) is designed to make workers easier to see in environments where moving vehicles, heavy equipment, poor lighting, weather conditions, or visual obstructions can create additional risk.
High-visibility clothing helps drivers, equipment operators, co-workers, and others recognize a worker's presence sooner and respond appropriately. This is especially important during night work, in low-light conditions, in fog or poor weather, and in busy work environments where workers may be difficult to distinguish from their surroundings.
High-visibility headwear and other accessories can also help improve visibility when part of a worker's body may be obscured by construction materials, traffic barriers, vegetation, equipment, or other objects.
Why High-Visibility Clothing Matters
The effectiveness of high-visibility apparel comes from a combination of bright or fluorescent background material and retroreflective striping.
Fluorescent colours improve daytime and low-light visibility, while retroreflective materials are designed to return light toward its source, making workers more noticeable when illuminated by vehicle headlights or other light sources.
Common high-visibility colours include fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red.
In dark conditions, retroreflective material becomes particularly important because fluorescent material requires natural or ambient light to be effective.
CSA Z96 High-Visibility Safety Apparel Standard
In Canada, high-visibility safety apparel is addressed by CSA Z96:22 – High-Visibility Safety Apparel.
The standard establishes requirements relating to areas such as:
- High-visibility background materials
- Retroreflective performance
- Garment design and configuration
- Minimum body coverage
- Placement of stripes and bands
- Colour and visibility requirements
CSA Z96:22 is the current edition of the standard and replaced earlier versions, including CSA Z96-15 and CSA Z96-09.
Safetywear.ca offers products across the three CSA high-visibility apparel classes.

Before purchasing high-visibility workwear, always confirm the requirements for your workplace with your employer, supervisor, safety officer, or applicable regulatory authority.
Depending on the work environment, you may also require additional features such as flame resistance, waterproofing, insulation, breathability, or specialized protective performance.
What to Consider When Choosing High-Visibility Workwear
Size
Consider what you will normally wear underneath the garment.
Insulated jackets, winter coats, and cold-weather safety apparel are often designed with layering in mind. If you expect to wear heavy sweaters, hoodies, or other bulky clothing underneath, make sure the garment provides sufficient room without becoming excessively loose.
Fit
High-visibility apparel should fit comfortably while allowing you to move freely and perform your work safely.
Avoid garments that are unnecessarily loose or baggy, particularly when working around machinery or equipment where loose clothing could create an additional hazard.
The garment should also be comfortable enough to wear consistently throughout the workday.
Design
CSA-compliant high-visibility apparel must follow specific design requirements for the placement and configuration of high-visibility and retroreflective materials.
Typical CSA designs include:
- A horizontal stripe or band around the torso
- Vertical stripes on the front
- A symmetrical “X” configuration on the back
- Additional arm and leg bands for Class 3 garments
Qualifying stripes and bands must meet applicable width, placement, and performance requirements.
Colour
CSA Z96 specifies requirements for both the high-visibility background material and the contrasting or retroreflective components of the garment.
Fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red are among the colours used for compliant high-visibility garments.
The overall garment design must provide sufficient contrast and visibility for the intended classification and work environment.
Always check the individual product specifications and garment label to confirm its CSA classification.
CSA High-Visibility Apparel Classes
CSA identifies three classes of high-visibility safety apparel, based primarily on the amount of body coverage provided by the high-visibility components of the garment.
Higher classes provide increased body coverage and visibility.
Class 1 High-Visibility Apparel
Class 1 provides the lowest recognized level of body coverage while still providing enhanced worker visibility.
Class 1 apparel typically uses a harness-style configuration or high-visibility and retroreflective bands positioned over the shoulders and around the waist.
Class 1 may be appropriate in lower-risk situations where workers:
- Have their full attention available to monitor approaching traffic
- Are well separated from moving vehicles or equipment
- Work in relatively simple visual environments
- Are exposed to lower vehicle speeds
Examples may include certain:
- Parking or service-area attendants
- Shopping cart attendants
- Warehouse workers
- Sidewalk or right-of-way maintenance workers
- Shipping and receiving workers
The appropriate class must always be determined by the actual workplace conditions and applicable safety requirements.

Class 2 High-Visibility Apparel
Class 2 provides greater body coverage and visibility than Class 1.
Class 2 garments generally provide high-visibility coverage across the upper torso, including the front, back, sides, and shoulder areas.
This class may be appropriate in environments where workers are closer to moving traffic or equipment, where vehicle speeds are higher, where weather or lighting conditions reduce visibility, or where the worker's attention may be divided between several tasks.
Examples may include certain:
- Road construction workers
- Utility workers
- Forestry workers
- Railway workers
- Survey crews
- School crossing guards
- Airport ground crews
- Roadside maintenance workers
- Law enforcement personnel
- Parking and toll-area workers
Depending on the risk level and workplace conditions, some of these situations may require Class 3 apparel instead.

Class 3 High-Visibility Apparel
Class 3 provides the greatest body coverage and visibility of the three CSA classes.
Class 3 apparel incorporates the upper-body visibility requirements associated with Class 2 while adding high-visibility and retroreflective bands around the arms and legs.
The additional coverage helps identify the human form and body movement, which can improve worker recognition from greater distances and in poor visibility.
Class 3 may be appropriate in higher-risk environments, including situations involving:
- Night work
- Poor visibility
- Higher traffic speeds
- Complex traffic patterns
- Road closures or lane changes
- Heavy congestion
- Workers operating close to moving vehicles or equipment
- Emergency response or traffic-control operations
Examples may include certain roadway workers, utility crews, flaggers, emergency responders, and workers operating in high-risk traffic environments.

Which CSA Class Do I Need?
The correct high-visibility apparel class depends on the specific hazards of your workplace.
Factors can include:
- Vehicle and equipment speeds
- Distance between workers and moving traffic
- Lighting conditions
- Weather
- Background complexity
- Traffic volume
- Whether the worker's attention is diverted from approaching vehicles
- Provincial or territorial regulations
- Employer-specific safety policies
Do not select high-visibility apparel based solely on a job title.
Your employer, supervisor, health and safety representative, or regulatory authority should determine the level of protection required for your work environment.
